Bret Baier Brings Presidential History to Life on National Civics Day with New Book on Theodore Roosevelt

On October 27, Bret Baier, bestselling author and Fox News Channel’s Chief Political Anchor, visited the Nixon Library to speak about his latest book, To Rescue the American Spirit: Teddy Roosevelt and the Birth of a Superpower.

Earlier that day, Baier hosted his news program, Special Report with Bret Baier, live from the Nixon Library. He also filmed several special segments highlighting the Library and President Nixon. Since his visit coincided with National Civics Day, he discussed the Nixon Foundation’s plans to build the American Civics Center and lead the nation in civics education.

The discussion was moderated by Dr. Luke Nichter, James H. Cavanaugh Endowed Chair in Presidential Studies and Director of the Presidential Studies Program at Chapman University.

This is Baier’s sixth presidential biography. He explained that he enjoys uncovering overlooked “jewels of history.” To Rescue the American Spirit highlights Theodore Roosevelt’s visionary leadership at the turn of the 20th century, as America rose to industrial power. The conversation also explored the legacies of Presidents Roosevelt and Nixon, particularly their efforts to advance environmental stewardship and strengthen America’s role on the world stage.

They discussed the cyclical nature of history and its lessons for today. When asked what children can learn from presidential history, Baier reflected, “Kids don’t fully appreciate how one man, one leader with a vision can change big things.”
